A company started by a Northern Virginia high school student aims to remove the inconvenience of driving glass recycling to a special purple bin.
LB Glass Pickup was started by a student in Lake Barcroft in 2022, and the company has expanded to serve the entire Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County region with curbside glass recycling pickup.
LB Glass will pick up glass for recycling twice per month at your residence, for $19 per month, and provide you with a free 18-gallon bin. LB Glass Pickup brings the glass to a purple glass recycling bin for you and deposits it there — saving residents the trip and making it easier to recycle glass.
The convenience-service company has started advertising on Facebook this fall and is gaining the attention of local residents.
Back in 2020, Alexandria joined other jurisdictions in removing glass from the curbside single-stream recycling program. The reasons had to do with contamination, rising recycling costs and other complications that resulted in a lot of glass ending up in landfills. Instead, residents are asked to separate glass recycling and drive it to one of several purple bins. (See the map below for purple bin locations.)
Residents of Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County can sign up for LB Glass Pickup through the company's website.
