Alexandria's most recognizable little U.S. Post Office will be closing at the end of this month.
The small white house on Seminary Road at the Virginia Theological Seminary that now houses the post office may have been built in the mid-1800s, though local historians are not sure that the building was always used as a Post Office. (Read more about the building and its murky history here.)
The VTS Post Office was on a list of locations under consideration for closure as early as 2011 by the USPS, but this winter's decision to close it was made by the VTS board of trustees. This is due in part to increasing seminary enrollment.
The following information was released by Virginia Theological Seminary:
At the end of this month, March 31, 2019, the little white post office located on the Seminary campus will officially close.
The decision to close the post office was made by the board of trustees at their November 2018 meeting in order to address two concerns in particular:
- The need to facilitate a more expedited arrival of US mail to the campus;
- The additional stress on a small postal operation on campus as the result of the increase in the number of residents living on the seminary campus.
A third concern, the identified need to use the building currently used for the post office to accommodate an expanding seminary program, will be clarified in the coming months.
