During the pandemic, Alexandria's resident replica historic tall ship, the Providence, is hosting a decidedly modern tour.
Tune in to Tall Ship Tuesdays at tallshipprovidence.org/tallshiptuesdays, a series of online discussions about Alexandria's maritime history, courtesy of Alexandria's Tall Ship Providence.
The Providence, anchored in Alexandria, provides a living link to the City's rich maritime, naval and Revolutionary history.
The Providence is a reproduction of the first ship authorized to serve in the Continental Navy and John Paul Jones' first American command. Jones was a well-known naval commander during the American Revolutionary War.
Every week, historic re-enactors talk about Providence, life aboard the ship and much more in a series of videos, online discussion and other virtual features.
If you want to learn more, the crew of the Providence have captured information and started a Tall Ship Tuesday Glossary of Terms. Be sure to visit the ship's Adventure page, and have any "Powder Monkey" you know join you, to test your knowledge with their word scrambler based on the glossary of terms.
In addition, visitors are encouraged to download a Providence coloring page.
