The Little Theatre of Alexandria presents "Jesus Christ Superstar"
The wildly popular "Jesus Christ Superstar" rock opera that debuted in 1970 is hitting the stage at The Little Theatre of Alexandria Saturday with performances continuing through Aug. 11.
The musical is still going strong today — a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events. Well-known songs include “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” "Hosanna,” and “Superstar.” The songs follow the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. It was originally banned by the BBC on grounds of being "sacrilegious."
The album came out in 1971, topping the Billboard charts with the musical debuting on Broadway in 1971 (with Ben Vereen playing Judas).
Lyrics are by Tim Rice with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber (they also collaborated on a little ditty called "Evita" and many others.).
The Alexandria production is directed by Jim Howard with music direction by Christopher Tomasino. The musical is being produced by Margaret Evans-Joyce and Robert Kraus and choreographed by Michael Page.
Tickets range from $29 to $34 and are available online. The theater is located at 600 Wolfe St. at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph streets in Alexandria. For more information, contact the box office at (703) 683-0496.
