On Saturday, April 15, 2023, five of Old Town Alexandria's finest private homes and gardens will open to visitors as part of the 90th annual Historic Garden Week in Virginia, the oldest and largest house and garden tour in the nation.
The Old Town Alexandria tour, a one-day-only event organized and hosted by the Garden Club of Alexandria and The Hunting Creek Garden Club, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This walking tour though Old Town Alexandria allows rare glimpses into private homes and gardens nestled along the tree-lined streets of the Historic District of Old Town. The five properties on tour feature remarkable historic restorations and inspiring architectural design and will showcase beautiful floral arrangements created by garden club members.
“We are thrilled to welcome visitors to our tour in Old Town Alexandria, which highlights gorgeous homes and gardens that have been lovingly restored and updated,” said tour co-Chair Barbara Warder. Warder further added, “We are grateful to the generous homeowners who are opening their homes for the tour – some for the first time ever.”
Among the homes on tour is the Dr. William Brown House, where George Washington frequently visited. The home integrates original features from Dr. Brown’s era, including a 1790 hand-hewn stone sink and bake oven, into exceptional updated interiors and exteriors.
Also on tour are magnificent examples of Federal and Greek Revival architecture, and neighboring frame homes that provide a sense of day-to-day life in 18th century Old Town Alexandria. The many treasures in these homes include period antiques, original artwork, and notable garden features.
“The beautiful gardens and floral arrangements are sure to inspire on tour day. Visiting these homes and exploring Old Town Alexandria is the perfect way to spend a Saturday in April,” said tour co-Chair Katherine Murphy.
In addition, the tour ticket allows access to two Garden Club of Virginia restoration projects, George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and Green Springs Gardens, and to other local places of interest.
