On Saturday, June 2, 80 Fort Hunt youth will be performing in an outdoor community concert at Nativity Lutheran Church
The performers are students of Piano Lab, an innovative music school located in Sherwood Crossing that provides ensemble piano classes to ages 5 and up. The performance is from noon to 4 p.m.
The students will be performing songs arranged for up to eight pianos at a time with the added support of a full back-up band, Chaise Lounge, winners of Washington Area Music Awards for best jazz/swing band. The pieces range from classical themes to blues melodies composed by each class, all orchestrated by professional film composer, Charlie Barnett.
“We have one objective with this event,” says Piano Lab owner, Marilyn O’Leary, “and that is to provide every student with a peak performance moment. When the students find themselves making great music with their peers in an atmosphere of community support and celebration, they will grasp what all of their hard work has been for. And it is moments like these that can transform enthusiastic beginners into lifelong musicians.”
It is expected that the attendance will expand well beyond proud parents and siblings. With multiple food trucks hired (Dogs on the Curb and Roro’s Modern Lebanese Cuisine, as well as WestRays Gourmet ice cream cart) the stage is set for festive afternoon and all are welcome. Interested families can learn more about Piano Lab and will have the chance to win free summer sessions in the hourly raffles.
The event will be located in the parking lot of Nativity Lutheran church at 1300 Collingwood road with additional parking offered across the street at Aldersgate Methodist.
Piano Lab Owner, Marilyn O’Leary, is a longtime professional musician performing regularly with her band, Chaise Lounge, at venues such as The Barns of Wolftrap, Blues Alley, and the Kennedy Center. She has taught piano for over 20 years in private and group settings.
Piano Lab is located at 7900 Andrus Rd. Ste. 11 in Alexandria. They have been running classes since June 2017 and are currently enrolling for summer sessions and fall classes.
