Every year at the end of summer, dogs take over the outdoor pools in Alexandria for a day.
This year, thanks to sponsor Your Dog’s Best Friend, admission is free to humans and dogs alike.
The dog swims will take place on Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22.
The swims will be split into two groups: one for dogs under 50 pounds and the other for dogs over 50 pounds.
The Itty Bitty Doggie Dive is Friday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Pool at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street.
The Big Dog Day Swim is Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at Old Town Pool, 1609 Cameron Street.
Dog handlers must be 16 or older and must be residents of the City of Alexandria.
Owners should bring their own water bowls for their dogs and have proof of vaccinations or have their dogs wear current vaccination tags.
Owners must register online using Itty Bitty Doggie Dive activity number 134390 or Big Dog Dayactivity number 134391.
Space is limited, so register early. Walk-ins will be allowed as space permits. Register through the Parks and Recreation website here.
Each reservation is for a 45-minute period, beginning on the hour. Dogs who arrive late will be invited in for the remainder of that hour.
