Scenes from Wonder Woman 2 may be filmed at Landmark Mall in Alexandria's West End this summer.
Wonder Woman 2 will be the sequel to 2017 summer blockbuster. The movie will star Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and Lynda Carter.
Scenes in Alexandria could be filmed in June and July, according to the Washington Business Journal. The movie has a release date of November 2019.
Earlier this spring, Marinella Hume Casting put out a request for actors and extras for a “major feature film” shooting in Virginia this summer, but the casting company would not release the name of the film.
"While we have not heard any official announcement from the Virginia Film Office, we would be thrilled to welcome a feature film of this magnitude," Visit Alexandria President Patricia Washington told Alexandria Living Magazine. "We know that Alexandria is a great place for filming and we benefit from the economic impact these productions bring to our city."
Washington noted that several feature films and television shows have shot scenes here in Alexandria. The list, she said, includes Jackie starring Natalie Portman and J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Television networks Discovery, HGTV, Bravo, The Cooking Channel and more have filmed episodes and scenes in Alexandria, too.
"And we were thrilled when Alexandria’s history inspired the PBS series Mercy Street, which was filmed in the Richmond area. Alexandria is attractive to many film producers due to our proximity to D.C., differing 'looks' in diverse neighborhoods and the ease of working with the Alexandria Film Office, operated by Visit Alexandria,” Washington said.
Earlier this spring, the Amazon series Mount Hideaway filmed in Old Town Alexandria (read more here).
Howard Hughes Corp. owns much of the Landmark Mall property, including Macy’s and the main mall structure. Both are closed and awaiting redevelopment.
According to Howard Hughes website thenewlandmark.com, “A new live-shop-dine urban village is on its way. The new Landmark will transform the 50-year-old mall into an active and welcoming hub to Alexandria’s West End—a community destination for the entire city. As an open-air urban village, the new Landmark will feature new residences, plazas and green spaces for community events, shops and restaurants, a 10-screen movie theater and more.”
