Eisenhower Avenue from South Van Dorn Street in the West End all the way to Holland Lane may see some changes.
For years, the 4-mile stretch has been attractive to drag racers for its lack of traffic, particularly late at night. The road rarely sees backups and is lightly traveled compared to parallel streets to the north, like Duke Street and Seminary Road.
The road would be used more heavily if long-ago plans to build a connector from Duke Street to Eisenhower Avenue had come to fruition.
City of Alexandria
Eisenhower Avenue study area 2024.
"The expected outcomes of the study are grant applications to fund identified improvements in the program. The project will keenly focus on issues such as the high crash rate between Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Ave Connector, poor connectivity and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists near Hensley Park, Holmes Run Trail, and Lake Cook, as well as addressing future demand concerns in the Eisenhower east section of the corridor," according to the city's project website.
The city has determined that solutions may focus on:
- Speeding
- Safety of all modes between Van Dorn Street and Clermont Avenue
- Poor accessibility to Metro stations via walking, scooting and biking
- Safety and Congestion at Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue
- Not precluding the Small Area Plan recommendations
The feedback form is here and will be available through May 6.
