With just minutes left before the 11:59 p.m. deadline Wednesday, residents broke Alexandria's Day of Giving record.
Spring2ACTion, when residents are encouraged to donate to their favorite nonprofit, raised $2.479 million — that beats last year's record of $2.45 million.
More than 8,100 residents donated to 156 nonprofits.
Hosted by ACT for Alexandria, Spring2ACTion is the only citywide giving day in the region designed to strengthen the impact of local nonprofits.
This year, early giving was particularly strong, according to ACT for Alexandria. Starting April 14, residents could start donating to Alexandria nonprofits for Spring2ACTion and early giving was up by more than 50 percent over last year.
Since its inception in 2011, Spring2ACTion has raised more than $15 Million for local nonprofits.
In addition to breaking a record in fundraising, ACT for Alexandria had a goal to engage at least 10,000 people through individual donations, corporate giving, donation events and more. Last year, more than 8,500 donors gave to 156 local nonprofits, so while the number of people who donated was down this year, those people gave more.
Three nonprofits received more than $100,000. They were:
- Running Brooke - $165,053
- Casa Chirilagua - $105,837
- Friends of Guest House - $100,715
