The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA or Metro) will close two Alexandria Metro rail stations as part of a larger effort to contain the potential for community spread of coronavirus.
The stations are two of 17 Metro stations closing systemwide. Metro also cited a substantial decline in ridership — nearly 90 percent — and said it is difficult to keep surfaces clean and disinfected against this coronavirus.
Metro has already significantly reduced Metrorail and Metrobus services to protect the health and safety of Metro employees and customers.Ridership has declined and respond to dramatic reductions in ridership and the difficulty keeping shared surfaces clean.
The public is urged to only use Metro services if absolutely necessary.
On Tuesday, the Alexandria Health Department confirmed four additional cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, bringing the total to 13. There are more than 45 Fairfax County.
