Rain will move into the Alexandria area Thursday night before changing to a mix of ice, sleet and snow early Friday — and Alexandria students scored another day at home.
"All schools will implement synchronous virtual learning on Thurs., Jan. 20, 2022. Class times will include synchronous instruction via Zoom, which means live virtual instruction with teachers, as well as independent work," Alexandria City Public Schools announced Wednesday evening.
Fairfax County Public Schools announced: "Due to the weather forecast calling for snow in the early morning, all Fairfax County Public Schools’ students will participate in virtual learning on Thursday, January 20. Students will have synchronous (teacher-led) instruction with a two-hour delay for middle schools and high schools. All elementary schools will begin at 10:30 a.m. ... The previously-scheduled early dismissal will remain in effect. Students will be dismissed from virtual instruction two hours early."
Snow in the Forecast
Precipitation is expected to start after 11 p.m. Wednesday as temperatures drop from an unseasonably warm day. Temperatures will drop from the 40s through the 30s and land in the upper 20s by sunrise Thursday. Rain may turn to snow showers and lead to icy conditions on the roadways Thursday morning. "Snow accumulations of up to two inches with locally higher amounts around three inches possible," according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast is mixed beyond Friday, with some meteorologists predicting more snow Friday night and Saturday, and others saying to expect cloudy skies but no accumulation of snow or rain.
According to the Capital Weather Gang: "Friday night and the weekend are a question mark at this point, with some models showing the possibility of snow either Friday night into Saturday or Saturday night into Sunday, and some models showing mostly dry conditions. Temperatures should stay on the chilly side with weekend highs near 30 to near 40. Confidence: Low."
