Alexandria could see more snow Wednesday than it has seen in two years. Or, Wednesday could be just a rainy, cold day.
That pesky “rain/snow line” is making an accurate prediction difficult for weather forecasters in our area.
The DC metro area may see snow, rain or any combination thereof depending on temperatures both in the upper atmosphere and on the ground — and depending on the storm’s trajectory.
As of Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service says Alexandria could get 3 to 4 inches of snow. Areas east of here will get a cold rain and areas west may get up to 12 inches of snow. But just a few miles’ difference in the storm trajectory could change the forecast from a few inches of snow to rain.
The National Weather Service published this map on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, showing its snowfall predictions:

Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell said a high pressure area could bring cold enough air for snow. “It will be a perfect day to prepare for snow on Wednesday. … Wednesday’s snow is likely to be the most significant snow in and around D.C in nearly two years,” he told WTOP.
The Capital Weather Gang’s prediction is a little less snowy, giving this area a chance for just an inch or two or snow.
