Earlier this month, the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) announced that it will work with national development companies Fairstead, Mill Creek Residential and The Communities Group (TCG) to transform the Samuel Madden public housing. The plan will significantly increase Alexandria’s affordable housing units.
The Samuel Madden public housing was originally built in 1945. It consists of 66 affordable, brick two- and three-bedroom townhouses which sit on 3.44 acres located along Henry and Patrick Streets (Route 1 South and Route 1 North) between Madison and First Streets.
A 10,000 square-foot public park with a playground and public art display is currently part of the design. The ground level of the apartment buildings could include a food pantry and retail space.
“I believe that this property will become the crown jewel of our portfolio,” ARHA CEO Keith Pettigrew said. “When you come down the hill on Route 1 into Old Town, this majestic site will be the first thing you see. I can’t think of a better way to welcome people to our city.”
ARHA and its development partners plan to submit a concept plan to the city some time in 2022.
