The Republcian primary election for Virginia's U.S.Senate race is set for June 23. The winner will run against incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Warner.
The candidates on the ballot on June 23 are Daniel M. Gade, Thomas A. Speciale II and Alissa A. Baldwin.
Gade, 45, is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, an Alexandria resident who teaches at American University. Baldwin, 42, is a civics teacher at a Nottoway County, Va. school and resides in Victoria, Va. Speciale, 50, is an Army reservist and resident of Woodbridge.
Due to COVID19, all voters are encouraged to vote absentee by mail (the Registrar's Office said checking off reason #2A, "my disability or illness" covers all who are voting during the pandemic).
The deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to you is Tuesday, June 16 by 5 p.m.
Voters who wish to vote In-person absentee for the June 23 primary may do so through Saturday, June 20 at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N. Royal St., Suite 100. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office is also open evenings Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 17 until 8 p.m.
In order to promote social distancing, when you arrive to vote In-person absentee you'll be asked to remain in your vehicle or outside the office and call 703-746-4050 or press the call button. The office will then begin a curbside absentee voting process. The accessible ballot marking device will be available inside the office for voters who require assistance in marking their ballot and choose not to use an assistant.
You can complete your application when you come to vote. Virginia's photo ID requirements apply to absentee voters who cast their absentee ballot in person. Voters who do not have acceptable ID may apply for an ID (and receive a temporary ID) at the same time they come to cast their in-person absentee ballot.
Absentee voting by mail
- Ballots are mailed within two business days via first class mail within the United States and by email or a special pre-paid U.S. postage permit to U.S. citizens living overseas and to military families.
- Voted absentee ballots must be received at the Voter Registration Office by 7 p.m. on Election Day to be counted.
- The voted ballot may be returned by mail or delivered in-person by the voter.
- Virginia's photo ID requirements do not apply to absentee voters who request an absentee ballot by mail.

- Apply online through the Virginia Department of Elections website; or,
- Use the links below to download an application. You may also call the Alexandria elections office (703-746-4050), and they will send you an application. Return the completed application to their office by mail (132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314), fax (703-838-6449) or scanned email attachment (VoteAbsentee@alexandriava.gov). If you want to vote in-person on June 23, Alexandria will have six polling locations open that day:
- Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St.): This will be the location for voters who normally vote at City Hall, Lyles Crouch School, Durant Center, Lee Center and AlexRenew.
- Maury School (600 Russell Road): This will be the location for voters who normally vote at Ladrey Senior Building, George Washington School, Fire Department Headquarters, Charles Houston Center and Maury School.
- Mt. Vernon Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave): This will be the location for voters who normally vote at Cora Kelly, Mt. Vernon, Potomac Yard, George Mason School, Charles Barrett Center.
- Minnie Howard School (3801 Braddock Road): This will be the location for voters who normally vote at Blessed Sacrament, Douglas MacArthur School, Chinquapin, Temple Beth El Synagogue, Patrick Henry Center.
- John Adams Schools (5651 Rayburn Ave): This will be the location for voters who normally vote at NOVA Arts Center, James K. Polk School, Hermitage, John Adams School and William Ramsay Center.
- Tucker Schools (435 Ferdinand Day Dr) : This will be the location for voters who normally vote at Beatley Library, Tucker School, South Port Apartments, Cameron Station and Olympus Condos.
