PenFed Credit Union staff members surprised shoppers Thursday morning at Safeway with $100 VISA gift cards. The credit union gave away more than $10,000 to shoppers Thursday morning.
"This made my day!" one shopper said.
PenFed has hosted similar giveaways at Safeway stores in Southeast D.C. and in Maryland, giving away $50,000 this spring to grocery store shoppers.
Naturally, some shoppers were a little bit suspicious, and PenFed staffers had to reassure several shoppers that the giveaway was real.
The giveaway occurred during "golden hours" at Safeway — a time reserved for seniors and immunocompromised shoppers to help them stay safe and healthy during the coronavirus pandemic. Golden hours are from 7 - 9 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
Radio personality Tommy McFy and co-host Kelly Collis welcomed shoppers at all three Safeway surprise giveaway events. McFly said he was happy to help make grocery shopping a little more pleasant this spring.
PenFed also brought snacks for store employees and gave shoppers masks and hand sanitizer along with the gift cards.
"We really appreciate this," Safeway store director Nicole said.
PenFed Credit Union was established in 1935. The financial institution has more than 1.9 million members worldwide.
