Alexandria residents will have another grocery store option beginning this week.
Giant will open a brand new store Friday morning at 6200 Little River Turnpike, at the Plaza at Landmark shopping center.
The $20 million store takes the place of its nearby store at 5730 Edsall Road, which will close its doors Thursday evening.
The new store will be larger and offer more options to its customers including expanded natural and organic food departments, as well as more produce, ethnic food, beer and wine selections and hot food bars. The new store is about 56,000 square feet, more than 10,000 square feet larger than the old Giant store on Edsall Road at the Van Dorn Station shopping center.
Customers will also enjoy free WIFI, a full service bank (PNC Bank) and a Starbucks Cafe. A full-service pharmacy and self-checkout options will also round out the offerings.
Alexandria residents have been Giant customers for many years, with locations at Alexandria Commons on Duke Street, Kingstowne and Potomac Yard, which saw a new Giant open three years ago.
That store replaced the Giant at 425 E. Monroe in Del Ray; an Aldi opened in its place. One of the smallest Giants (at 21,000 square feet), known to regulars as the "Little Giant," closed its doors five years ago at Bradlee Shopping Center after serving the area since 1954. A Fresh Market opened in that location. Giant's store on Beauregard also closed; it had operated there since 1973.
"Our team is very happy to have the opportunity to invest in two new stores in Virginia, a market Giant has had a presence in for 77 years," said Gordon Reid, president of Giant Food, in a statement. The company is also opening a new store in Herndon.
The new Alexandria store takes the place of a Shoppers Food Warehouse, which closed June 18 at Plaza at Landmark.
Headquartered in Landover, Md., Giant operates 166 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, and employs approximately 20,000 associates. Included within the 166 stores are 156 full-service pharmacies. For more information on Giant, visit www.giantfood.com.
