A small portion of the waterfront may be developed — but into what is still to be determined.
The City of Alexandria received an unsolicited proposal to develop an 8-space parking lot adjacent to 2 King St., which the City acquired through a settlement agreement with the Old Dominion Boat Club.
Most of the parking lot of the Old Dominion Boat Club was turned into the new Waterfront Park,, but there's a small remaining portion with 8 parking spaces that remains. City officials have not decided on a use for it.
Due to the development offer, the Alexandria Waterfront Commission will hold a community meeting to receive comments on the potential use of the portion of 2 King St. that includes these parking spaces.
Strand Street is slated to become a pedestrian-oriented area, so parking spaces will not be needed there in the long term.
The space in question is just 1,825 square feet — less than 1/20 of an acre (or about 0.05 acres).
Aerial and other images of the space are shown below (and more information is available in this PDF from the November Waterfront Commission meeting).
A community engagement meeting will be on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in City Hall Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 (301 King St.).
On Facebook, Alexandria Living Magazine readers advocated for public bathrooms, historic markers and somebody's private parking spot. (Read the comments here.)
