A new apartment complex, roadway changes and more are coming to the booming Eisenhower East neighborhood.
Construction is in progress on the new Wegmans grocery store, which is aiming for a 2022 opening. The grocery store is part of a mixed-use project on a 5-acre site just north of the AMC Hoffman movie theater, according to developer StoneBridgeCarras. The project will also several hundred residential units.
The Foundry at 2470 Mandeville Lane is a pet-friendly building with studios and one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Leasing is starting now and the building is expected to open this spring for residents. Rents range from $1,800 to more than $4,300 per month. The building will have a heated rooftop pool, sports bar and more.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), which runs Metrorail and Metrobus, received approval to build a 14-story headquarters very close to the new Wegmans. Construction has not started yet.
Road Widening and Roundabout Elimination Coming
In part to accommodate the increased traffic expected with the new residents and retail, Alexandria’s Transportation & Environmental Services announced that Eisenhower Avenue between Mill Road and Holland Lane will be widened.

The work will include an additional left turn lane and upgrades to receiving lanes to improve traffic flow.
In addition, plans from a few years ago to eliminate the traffic circle at Holland Lane in favor of a T-intersection will come to fruition.
There will also be upgrades to sidewalks and street lights in that area, and the road will be resurfaced.
Road construction funding is coming from Virginia State Urban funds and construction will start this spring.
