The Old Town North neighborhood is Alexandria's most active for redevelopment — and one of its iconic high-rise buildings is on the list.
The Ladrey, a high-rise at the intersection of North Fairfax and Wythe streets, is owned by the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The 11-story residential high-rise building was built in 1978. The property also includes a 1950s office building.
AHRA, the Winn Companies and IBF plan to demolish the two buildings and build below-market-rate housing that is safe, comfortable and ADA-compliant.
The buildings will be replaced with one, larger L-shaped building that has sections of 5, 6 and 7 stories. In addition to replacing all currently "deeply affordable" units, the new building will have 100 additional units for those with incomes at 60% or 80% of area median income. Parking will be moved underground and slightly reduced. A new, small park will be at the corner of North Fairfax and Wythe streets, in addition to a pocket park with an art wall and an outdoor courtyard.
Construction could start in 2025 with delivery of the project in 2028. More information is available at theladrey.com.
