Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, KH Giving has hired people to make and deliver masks, created unique special events and given away prizes — all to support local jobs and nonprofit organizations.
The results have been stunning: The organization has pumped more than $90,000 into the local economy by providing local, well-paying jobs and supporting nonprofit organizations, KH Giving reported.
Leonard is founder of KatherineHelena, a fundraising organization raising money through fine jewelry sales, which suspended operations as COVID-19 spread. (KatherineHelena has since resumed operations and is again selling jewelry as a major fundraiser for The Campagna Center and other organizations both local and national.)
The first local nonprofit to benefit from KH Giving was United Community. Proceeds from the sale of masks, after supporting local jobs making and delivering the masks, went to United Community to support the program’s food pantry with masks, cleaning supplies and food for Alexandrians.
Many other organizations have benefitted, including Casa Chirilagua, Tall Ship Providence Foundation, Volunteer Alexandria, ALIVE!, National Breast Center Foundation and Senior Services of Alexandria.
“There was an immediate need in our community for personal protective equipment and supplies for those in our highest-risk population. Sitting on the sidelines for this fight was not an option,” Leonard said. KH Giving partnered with another Alexandria female-owned business, Artistic Artifacts, where KH Giving made all of their fabric purchases for their locally made masks.
Leonard has also worked with many locally owned restaurants to continue KH Giving’s work of supporting Alexandria during the pandemic. “Caring for your neighbors and those in need around you should always be first priority. Alexandria is my home and will forever have my heart.”
KH Giving’s goal is to get to $150,000 by the end of this year. To help, go to www.khgiving.org or www.katherinehelena.com.
