June 18, voters across Virginia will vote in a primary in a variety of races. While much focus has been on the city council and mayoral races in the City of Alexandria, other races are on the ballot, as well.
WHERE AND WHEN TO VOTE
Some voting locations have changed in the past year, which means that where you voted last time may not be the same. To find out where your voting location is,
The Virginia Dept. of Elections has a voting location tool here you can use.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
WHO CAN VOTE?
Virginia is an interesting state: Anyone can vote in any primary, but not both. In part, that's because Virginia voters do not register with a specific party. So, Democrats can vote in the Republican primary, and Republicans can vote on the Democrats primary. However, voters cannot vote in both primaries. Voter registration was due back in May, however same-day registration is available if you are at your proper assigned polling location. You will be given a provisional ballot that may be counted once your registration clears.
Bring an official ID with you to your polling place — you will be asked to show it!
U.S. SENATE REPUBLICAN PRIMARY
There is no primary for Democrats running for U.S. Senate. However, there are multiple Republicans vying to challenge the incumbent Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine. The Republicans in the June 18 primary are listed here (click on their name to access their candidacy website):
- Hung Cao
- Edward C. "Eddie" Garcia Jr.
- Jonathan W. Emord
- C. L. "Chuck" Smith, Jr.
- Scott Thomas Parkinson
There is also a Republican U.S. House primary in Virginia's 10th District, but voters in the Alexandria area will not see that on their ballot. The 10th District covers areas around Manassas, Leesburg and Marshall.
U.S. HOUSE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY
U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, the incumbent, is facing a challenge from Ahsan M. Nasar in Virginia's 11th District, which covers areas South and West of the Beltway from Franconia and Springfield up to Great Falls. Some Alexandria-area voters will see this primary on their ballot, but not many.
ALEXANDRIA CITY MAYORAL RACE
Alexandria voters will be choosing from a number of Democrats in the primary for Mayor and City Council. There are 3 Democrats running for Mayor in this primary.
In April, Alexandria Living Magazine spoke with each of the three Democrats running for Mayor to replace Justin Wilson, and also asked them each to answer, in writing, a series of questions. Click on the name of each candidate for an introduction to them and their answers to questions about crime, livability, transportation, development and more.

ALEXANDRIA CITY COUNCIL RACE
There are 11 Democrats running for 6 available city council seats in this primary. (On your ballot, you do not have to choose 6 people, choosing fewer is ok.) In November, an independent candidate and a Republican candidate will also be on the ballot, running to claim one of those 6 seats.
Alexandria Living Magazine's sent identical questionnaires to all of the candidates who will be in the June 18 Democratic primary. Click on the candidate's name to access their answers, which are presented in alphabetical order by last name. Incumbents are marked with an *.
