Landmark Mall redevelopment plans are starting to come together — and those plans could include a major medical facility.
Inova is considering building a new facility for women and children, a helipad and cancer research center as part of the Landmark Mall redevelopment, the Washington Business Journal reported today (paid subscription required).
“What’s not immediately clear is whether a new medical facility at Landmark would replace the existing 334-bed Inova Alexandria Hospital complex on Seminary Road or serve as expansion,” WBJ reported.
Currently, the Howard Hughes Corp. owns the former Macy’s and the main part of the former mall. Sears, through real estate holding company Seritage, owns its portion of the mall property and the land around it. City of Alexandria officials say the Howard Hughes Corp. are close to an agreement with Seritage to acquire that property for redevelopment.
If Howard Hughes Corp. is able to take control of the entire Landmark Mall property, the redevelopment opportunities expand significantly and can include any combination of retail, residential, office space — and even medical facilities.
The original plans from Howard Hughes Corp. in 2013 called for residential development and an open-air shopping center — the acquisition of Macy’s in 2016 opened new possibilities.
Landmark Mall sits on a 51-acre site in a prime location off of I-395 in Alexandria’s West End.
The Carpenter’s Shelter moved to a portion of the former Macy’s department store at Landmark Mall in early June. The shelter’s former property is being torn down and reconstructed as a purpose-built shelter and affordable housing building.
Other part of the mall are being used as a set for ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ the next movie in the Wonder Woman series starring Gal Gadot, Kristin Wiig and Lynda Carter.
