With all but the provisional ballots counted, Vice Mayor Justin Wilson received the majority of ballots cast in Tuesday's Democratic primary, setting him up to likely become the next mayor of the City of Alexandria.
Wilson received 52.87 percent of the 21,284 ballots cast in Tuesday's Democratic primary. Current Mayor Allison Silberberg, who was running for re-election, received 47.13 percent. Silberberg won most precincts in the Old Town and far West End neighborhoods of Alexandria, while Wilson swept most of Central Alexandria. Each candidate won 14 precincts; Silberberg carried absentee ballots — but Wilson's total number of votes was greater. Results were as of 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 12.
Wilson said earlier this year that his focus includes making Alexandria “a community where our children have every opportunity at success, our economy diversifies and grows, and our community’s livability is enriched by quality transit, parks, open space and housing.” He was a City Council member for three terms.
Silberberg told voters she aimed to “pursue thoughtful, appropriate development that fits in, is to scale, and protects our neighborhoods and quality of life.” She also said she wanted to “grow our commercial tax base in a balanced way with a staunch commitment to economic sustainability and fiscal responsibility.” She is a former Vice Mayor of Alexandria and former City Council member.
Wilson will appear on the ballot in November. The Alexandria GOP did not respond to an information request about whether they are fielding a mayoral candidate this year; the party's canvass was June 7.
Alexandria's Independents were to decide on candidates Tuesday, but organizers have not announced candidates for mayor or city council yet.
Precinct-by-precinct results for Mayor are shown in the map at the top of this page.

Alexandria City Council
There were 12 candidates for Alexandria City Council competing for just six seats.
Several of the candidates were new to Alexandria politics. Current City Council Member Timothy Lovain did not run for re-election, and Wilson gave up his seat to run for mayor. City Council terms last for three years.
