The Office of Historic Alexandria has been accepted as a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is the only international network of historic sites, museums and memory initiatives with the goal of remembering past struggles and relating them to current human rights issues. Sites of Conscience serve as a place to remember and learn.
“Not only do Sites of Conscience provide safe spaces to remember and preserve even the most traumatic memories, but they enable their visitors to make connections between the past and related contemporary human rights issues,” says the coalition about the mission.
Historic Alexandria will be joining over 300 other members in 65 different countries working to connect the past to present action. Historic Alexandria is a department in the City of Alexandria, and as a part of the equity and inclusion initiative, “the department provides opportunities for residents and guests to explore difficult historical topics and their legacies today.”
The coalition helps members connect past history to today’s human rights issues through grants, training and advocacy.
