Hilco Redevelopment Partners had a big week.
The company, which is working on plans to demolish and reimagine land use at the former power plant in Old Town North, won the Red Clay Development of the Year Award. The award was presented to the City of Alexandria's Department of Planning and Zoning for the redevelopment project by the Virginia chapter of the American Planning Association. It "honors a development that exhibits the values of great planning, helping to create a great place in Virginia." Nominees typically focus on infill developments, building rehabilitation projects, brownfield redevelopments, downtown redevelopment and related projects.
In addition, Hilco presented a $10,000 check to Computer CORE, a local nonprofit organization that provides critical digital skills training and more. (Read more about Computer CORE here.)
The event highlighted the importance of workforce development for the 2,000 permanent jobs that will be created by the Potomac River Generating Station redevelopment project.
Deconstruction of the physical site will likely start in late 2024 or early 2025 before construction starts on the mixed-use area, which will include new trails and parks along the Potomac River.
