Billionaire philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott this week gave $640 million hundreds of small nonprofits — and Alexandria's Friends of Guest House was one of them.
Friends of Guest House, which received $2 million, helps women successfully reenter the community after incarceration. "Guest House has helped more than 5,000 women break the vicious cycle of incarceration, reunite with their families, and reintegrate into their communities," according to the nonprofit.
The organization provides a Residential-to-Aftercare program continuum, Workforce & Life Development Program, and a non-residential Outreach Program.
Executive Director Sonja Allen said, “This transformative grant from Mackenzie Scott’s Yield Giving is a testament to the dedication and impact of our organization over the past five decades. We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary gesture of support that will enable us to strengthen our programs, reach more women in need, and create lasting positive change in our community.”
Yield Giving "is named after a belief in adding value by giving up control," according to the program.
