Fairfax County
Original Mount Vernon High School redevelopment plans.
The adaptive reuse plans for the original Mount Vernon High School are moving forward this summer.
Fairfax County officials are seeking input on the project from residents and shareholders. The original building, located at 8333 Richmond Hwy., was built in 1939 on 22 acres that were once part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate.
According to the County, "The overarching vision of Phase I is to leverage the former high school to build communities of opportunity, create career pathways, connect different generations and better integrate residents into the economy. The renovated high school will be suitable for educational, childcare and childhood education programs; art, recreational, and life skill training programs; and innovation and business incubation spaces."
It served as the location of Mount Vernon High School until 1973, then it was used by Walt Whitman Intermediate School through 1985. The building was then leased to the Islamic Saudi Academy in 1989 until the school closed in 2016. The building has also been used by multiple other groups.
In 2018, the building was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and plans have been made to renovate, restore and repurpose the historic structure and surrounding property to benefit the community.
