Officer Philips, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria
Wednesday, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's Animal Services received several messages from residents reporting an injured bald eagle near the Metro tracks along Cameron Run Regional Park.
When Officers Boyd and Phillips arrived, they could see the bird was injured, as it was not able to lift its left wing or fly away, according to an account from Gina Hardter, AWLA's Director of Communications.
"They following the eagle through the undergrowth to get a better view of her and to see how they could help; they were later joined by WMATA's Metro Transit Police Officers Anderson, Enoch, Donahue and Damron, who helped them to surround the bird and guide her into a location where they could apprehend her and place her in a carrying crate for safety," she said.
Metro trains were instructed to reduce speeds in the area to keep the eagle from becoming too startled.
The eagle was transferred to the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center in Clark County, Virginia.
AWLA hasn't received information yet on the eagle, but the officers are hoping she can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild in Alexandria.
