The City of Alexandria is accepting applications for a curbside composting program. Now in its second year, residents can sign up to have their compost collected free outside their home.
Households can sign up by filling out the curbside compost collection registration form. Not all applicants will be accepted, depending on eligibility and program limits.
Eligible residents are those who currently receive curbside or alley trash, recycling, and yard waste collection services. If accepted, they will receive a composting starter kit with a 7-gallon green cart, a six-month supply of compost bags, and educational materials.
Residents will be able to place items such as fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, and bones in a dedicated bin for food waste collection instead of putting food waste in the trash. This program is in addition to the free farmers' market composting services provided to all residents, expanding the number of ways residents can divert waste from trash and create compost soil, a nutrient-rich soil amendment.
During the pilot period, participants will be encouraged to provide feedback to the City and after the pilot period ends in April 2025, residents may continue service with the vendor for a subsidized fee.
