To help commuters get around without Metrorail this summer, City of Alexandria officials will be hosting an open house Wednesday, May 22 to answer questions and help residents plan their new commute into Arlington and the District.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will be suspending Metro rail service from Saturday, May 25 through early September to facilitate major rehabilitation of station platforms. There will be no Metrorail service south of Reagan National Airport.
The May 22 open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oswald Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St.). Residents are welcome to drop-in and ask questions at any time.
There will be a free network of shuttle buses available to residents, as well as free parking at Metro stations and multiple alternatives for transportation.
Also on Wednesday from 8 - 9 p.m., City officials will host an online virtual information session, to answer questions about the Metro rail shutdown. The session will be accessible on the City’s website and Facebook page. Questions may be submitted in advance at alexandriava.gov/GOAlex, or asked live during the online session on social media, by text message at 703-405-8902 or by phone at 70-746-3300.
A recording of the session will be available online after the session ends.
Metro’s online trip planner, which includes station specific information about travel between May 25 and September 8, is available at wmata.com/platforms.
In addition to the Metro trip planner, Alexandria is providing travel planning assistance to residents through GO Alex, Alexandria’s resource for transportation alternatives. A full list of expanded travel options is available at alexandriava.gov/GOAlex.
In addition to transit options, the City has also implemented traffic engineering solutions, such as expanding HOV hours along key corridors and technology that will help keep buses on schedule this summer. Full details are available on the City’s Platform Improvement Project web page.
