The nonprofit organization ALIVE! has opened its second food hub in Alexandria.
The first opened on South Van Dorn Street last year. This new food hub is at 2601 Mt. Vernon Ave.
"This is about more than food. This is about people and helping them connect to the many great services and programs our city has to offer so that people can thrive. This Food Hub will be a place of dignity, safety, and community, and this is a place we are glad to share," director Jennifer Ayers in a Facebook post.
ALIVE! hosts a variety of programs for residents in need of assistance, including food distribution, emergency financial assistance, furniture donations and more. The organization's mission is "to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to dramatically improve the lives of those in need in the City of Alexandria."
The organization is looking for volunteers who can help the next few Saturdays from 1 - 4 p.m. to turn the yard next to to the building into a community garden. To get involved in the community garden project, go to www.alive-inc.org/we-need-volunteers-alexandria-va.
