On April 16, 2007, a shooter took the lives of 32 students and faculty at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, 23, was a senior majoring in English and was a graduate of Westfield High School's 2003 class in Fairfax County.
The victims and survivors will be remembered this spring in Alexandria with a fundraising reception scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 6 for the Virginia Tech Victims Family Outreach Foundation. The Foundation plans to plant 32 trees at Chinquapin Park in Alexandria in a commemorative grove designed by Virginia Tech graduate students in honor of the victims and survivors of the tragedy.
The Virginia Tech Victims Family Outreach Foundation (VTV) is primarily working to prevent gun violence tragedies stemming from an insufficient amount of information in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
The premier sponsor of the commemorative grove is HSBC.
Expected at the reception: Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg, as well as featured speaker Bryant Porter, Commonwealth's Attorney, City of Alexandria.
The event is set for 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the home of David Lord and Greg Parks, 1005 Russell Road in Alexandria. Suggested contributions range from $32 to $500.
