From barking dogs to thumping music, Alexandria officials are taking another look at the role noise plays in the community.
Residents can provide feedback on potential policy options now through Oct. 22 through alexandriava.gov/noise. A virtual meeting is scheduled for Oct. 28.
The video here provides background information and talks about 10 policy options that are under consideration. The policy options are a part of the second (and final) phase of technical revisions to the city's noise ordinance.
Between the Office of Environmental Quality, the Alexandria Police Department and Animal Control, officials respond to more than 2,400 noise complaints per year — everything from construction to parties and barking dogs. The goal of the phase II changes to the noise ordinance are to make noise regulations easier to understand and more predictable, equitable and enforceable.
Potential changes in this phase include considering a property type when considering noise allowances, limiting noise from DIY construction projects and new regulations surrounding overnight noise.
