According to sponsors, the Alexandria Drive-In Theater will take a summer hiatus at the end of June.
The current lineup of Black Panther, The Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will continue as scheduled.
Representatives of the drive-in theater cited a number of factors for the closure, according to sponsors, including drop in attendance as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, increased daylight in the evening and those pesky cicada noises!
The Alexandria Drive-In Theater was started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide a safe way for people to get out and have fun while many entertainment venues were shut down. Proceeds of the drive-in benefitted the ATHENA Rapid Response Innovation Lab and other local charities.
The drive-in theater plans to resume in the fall and could be held in a new location. The former Landmark Mall site is currently being considered. Construction of townhomes next to the Victory Center where the drive-in movies are held is slated to begin in January 2022.
