Fifteen of Alexandria's 18 schools are fully accredited, according to data released last week by the Virginia Dept. of Education.
ACPS saw increases in division performance in the annual Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in mathematics, science, writing and history/social sciences, and a consistent pass rate in reading, when compared to the previous school year.
“We are pleased to see that our SOL pass rates are moving in the right direction in ACPS, especially with increases in Math and Science, two areas that were highly impacted by the pandemic and have been a priority in our learning recovery initiatives,” said Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt.
However, Alexandria continues to lag behind other jurisdictions in Virginia. This may be due in part to the high number of English Language Leaners in Alexandria compared to other parts of the state.
The following are the ACPS division-wide federally adjusted SOL pass rates released by the VDOE for the 2022-23 school year, with the percentage change from the previous year and statewide pass rate:
- Mathematics: 53%; +4 percentage points (statewide pass rate 69%)
- Reading: 60%; -1 percentage point (statewide pass rate 73%)
- Science: 52%; +3 percentage points (statewide pass rate 67%)
- Writing: 65%; +3 percentage points (statewide pass rate 65%)
- History/Social Sciences: 56%; +2 percentage points (statewide pass rate 65%)
“We know there is still much work to be done as we continue to implement best instructional practices as we accelerate learning and focus on our students’ social, emotional and academic learning," Kay-Wyatt said. "These results are a welcome sign that the hard work our staff and students are doing is showing results. I am proud of our students and commend our staff for all of their efforts and their continued commitment to advancing academic excellence for all students.”
