The Alexandria Black History Museum, at 902 Wythe St., will reopen this weekend after undergoing renovations.
The museum is housed in an old library building that opened in 1940 as a segregated library. In 1983, the Robert H. Robinson Library re-opened as the Black Alexandria & Parker Gray Alumni Historic Resource Center. The name later changed to the Alexandria Black History Resource Center and then the Alexandria Black History Museum. In 1987, the city of Alexandria placed the museum under the Office of Historic Alexandria, and provided funding for an addition to the building.
The last renovation of the space was in 1988.
In the following years, Alexandria build a reading room next door to the museum, and added the 9-acre Alexandria African American Heritage Park to the museum's properties. (The park is a few blocks away at 500 Holland Lane.)
The museum will be open to the public next week.
