Alexandria is one of the top 20 cities nationwide to live without a car, according to a new study from CoworkingCafe.
CoworkingCafe analyzed 331 U.S. cities across multiple metrics, such as the percentage of the population that commutes by public transportation, walking, or biking, the stations’ and bike lanes’ densities — and number of coworking spaces.
Alexandria ranked 14th nationwide in the list of the best cities to live without a car. (Arlington ranked 16th.) The top two cities were Boston and Newark.
From CoworkingCafe:
"Here is what pushed Alexandria & Arlington high in our ranking:
- Arlington claimed the 9th highest share of residents who use public transportation, at 21.6%, while Alexandria’s share of 16% puts it in the 17th spot nationally.
- Alexandria and Arlington also have high densities of coworking spaces, with more than 12 and 10 such spaces per 100,000 residents, respectively. The high number and even distribution of coworking spaces come in handy for many workers who need a flexible workspace near their home, therefore shortening their commute.
- 3.4% of Alexandria’s residents walk and 1% bike for their commute, while in Arlington 4.6% choose to walk and 1.5% to bike to work."
