ACT for Alexandria, which supports local nonprofit organizations, launched a special ACTNow Fund earlier this year help in times of community crisis.
Spurred by the partial shutdown of the government earlier this year, the City of Alexandria and ACT for Alexandria each contributed $25,000 to a new fund designed to help nonprofit organizations increase services in times of real need. Residents contributed, as well, bringing the total to more than $68,600.
The ACTNow Fund is continuing to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that serve Alexandria residents affected by the government shutdown.
Although the shutdown is over, the effects for some residents are continuing as they try to recover. Many of the people affected by the shutdown include contractors who did not receive back pay and the working poor whose sudden disruption of income put them in a precarious situation.
The fund’s priority is to help organizations provide emergency services (food, housing, child care and more), followed by services that helps those affected rebound from their setback.
ACT for Alexandria has made more than $34,000 in grants to multiple organizations through the fund. The organizations provided food and emergency financial assistance to residents.
The ACTNow Fund is continuing to accept both contributions from residents and applications for funding from nonprofit organizations. The next deadlines for grant applications are March 15 and 29.
