Safety concerns in Alexandria City Public Schools and outside of the buildings in the larger community has become an increasing concern among ACPS students, staff and parents.
This Wednesday evening, the Alexandria Council of PTAs (PTAC), Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and Parents for Safe Alexandria Schools (PSAS) will host a forum on public safety in the schools and community.
The forum will be hosted at George Washington Middle School from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 26). The forum will be simulcast on Zoom and on Facebook live. The forum’s panel of community experts will take questions and address the importance of maintaining safety in our schools and community, the school division’s collaboration with the Alexandria Police Department (APD) and how families can work with ACPS to help keep our students and staff safe, ACPS officials explained.
In addition to ACPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt and members of the ACPS security and student services teams, the panel will include representatives from the APD and the following organizations: Alexandria City Gang Prevention Community Task Force, Everytown for Gun Safety’s Be SMART Secure Gun Storage Program and the City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation & Environmental Services.
The community is invited to attend the forum in person or participate live online via Zoom or Facebook live streaming. Anyone planning to attend in person is asked to RSVP ahead of time at www.acps.cc/SafetyForum. Pizza will be provided at the school and interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic and Dari. Details about the forum can be found on the ACPS website. Please note that child-sensitive content will be discussed.
