October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which means you will see pink ribbons, decorations and displays in windows around Alexandria. It also means its time for the National Breast Center Foundation's 7th annual Walk to Bust Cancer, which will be held at Fort Hunt Park (8999 Fort Hunt Rd.) on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 9 a.m.
The walk provides an important opportunity for the Alexandria community to raise funds for breast cancer screening and treatment, celebrating survivorship, honoring those we have lost to the disease and lifting up and supporting those currently undergoing treatment. In addition to the 1.2 mile walk, this family-oriented event will include inspirational dances, mindful meditation, exercise warm-ups and cool downs. Participants and teams are encouraged to show their spirt with creative costumes for the event.
Walk organizers expect over 500 walkers to participate in this year's event which will be held in-person as well as virtually, with a goal of raising over $150,000.
“We all know someone — a family member, neighbor, co-worker, or friend — who has been touched by breast cancer. This is a global problem, and we are committed to make a difference starting right here in our own community,” said Dr. David Weintritt, Founder of the National Breast Center and Foundation. “Thanks to the support of our community, we have been able to assist over 150 women with more than 400 completed screenings, diagnostic exams and procedures."
The National Breast Center Foundation is based here in Alexandria with the aim to improve the lives of women by removing barriers that prevent them from getting proper screening, diagnosis, treatment and education about breast cancer. Martha Carucci serves as the Executive Director of the foundation.
Leading up to the walk, the foundation will be partnering with several Alexandria businesses to promote the walk and Breast Cancer Awareness month. A pair of giant angel wings, now a known symbol of the Walk to Bust Cancer, will be traveling to different locations throughout Alexandria, where people are encouraged to take photos to share on social media (#walktobustcancer and #angelwingchallenge), register for the walk, and learn more about breast cancer risks and genetic testing.
The wings have been named "Mary's Wings" in honor of their creator and long-time committee member for the Walk to Bust Cancer, Mary Edwards, who passed in January.
You can find out more and register for the walk at the Walk to Bust Cancer website where you can also follow the status of the wings as they make their way around Alexandria.
