In March 2020, Alexandria City Public Schools called on Volunteer Alexandria to help distribute meals to students who were suddenly learning from home due to the pandemic.
Volunteer Alexandria is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting volunteerism and matching volunteers with opportunities that meet their interests and skillsets.
By the middle of August, Volunteer Alexandria and ACPS had delivered 4,106,889 grab-and-go meals and snacks to Alexandria students and their families.
“Thank you for all your support, we could not have accomplished this undertaking without the support of the many volunteers throughout this wonderful community," said Cynthia Hormel, Director of School Nutrition Services.
Now that the school year has started, all ACPS students are able to eat breakfast and lunch free at school. But the work of distributing food will continue for those students who are continuing to learn virtually this fall.
Volunteer Alexandria continues to seek volunteers who can pick up meals and deliver them to families this fall. (You can register online to help.)
Other volunteer opportunities for children, teens and adults are available through VolunteerAlexandria.org, and include opportunities with DASH, the ALX Fit Fair, emergency preparedness outreach and supporting refugees from Afghanistan.
