Art on the Avenue has been postponed due to weather for only the second time in its 27-year history.
Hurricane Ian crossed over Florida Wednesday and Thursday. It turned into a tropical storm over Florida, but it regained strength over the Atlantic Ocean Thursday and is a hurricane again. It is expected to make landfall over South Carolina today.
The remnants of the hurricane will be bringing significant amounts of rain to Virginia starting Friday afternoon. Rain is expected to continue Saturday and Sunday, tapering off Monday and Tuesday. There is a chance of localized flooding.
Art on the Avenue draws hundreds of artists every year, shutting down Mount Vernon Avenue through most of Del Ray. Tens of thousands of people attend the event -- when the weather is good.
Last year, the weather was perfect but a power outage hit the Del Ray neighborhood, hobbling restaurants in the area on what is traditionally one of their busiest days of the year.
Art on the Avenue is rescheduled for Nov. 12.
