The building at 880 S. Pickett St. is being completely demolished to make room for a 6-story self-storage facility.
Public Storage/BoatUS requested approval last year for a new Coordinated Development District to build two new buildings near South Pickett Street at Burnside Place. The development is near Aslin Beer Co. in Alexandria's West End on South Pickett Street west of South Van Dorn (see map below).
One of the buildings is a 6-story self-storage building, and that's the building that will be under construction soon. A demolition company is currently razing the building that was on the property, which was occupied by the BoatUS Association. In addition to self-storage, there will be ground level commercial at the site.
The second building would be multifamily residential and will require a separate special use permit from the City of Alexandria prior to being built.
