Gables Old Town North apartment homes and retail is set to open in early 2019 in Old Town North at 530 First St., anchored on the ground floor by the home decor and furniture store West Elm and a new steakhouse.
The developer, EDENS, hired architects Hord Coplan Macht, which has an office in Alexandria, to design the project. Groundbreaking on the project took place last year.
The mixed-use development in Alexandria will be anchored at the street level by more 50,000 square feet of retail, a public plaza and green space. The retail tenants already secured are West Elm and Oak Steakhouse. A third retail space is still available.
"Our team’s first challenge was to create a contemporary building that still conformed to the city’s historic style," the architecture firm noted. They decided on a design that "seeks to respect the past mercantile history of the neighborhood while looking ahead to the future with its modern amenities and details."
EDENS was honored recently by the ICSC International Council of Shopping Centers for the 2018 VIVA Awards in Retail Store Design. The award celebrates vision, innovation, value and achievement in the design of Masseria at Union Market DC.
The six-story building will feature 232 apartment units and 481 parking spaces.
