On the heels of being called one of the South's Best Cities earlier this spring from Southern Living magazine, Alexandria got another major accolade: Alexandria is the #2 Friendliest City in the U.S. according to the 2019 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
Alexandria is ranked just behind Savannah, Georgia, and ranks above Boulder, Colorado; Charleston, South Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Asheville, North Carolina.
This newly announced praise is the result of the same reader survey that earned Alexandria recognition as a Top 3 Best Small City in the U.S. alongside Charleston and Santa Fe.
Voting is open now for the 2020 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards and Alexandria is nominated again this year.
Condé Nast Traveler’s Friendliest Cities in the U.S. article describes Alexandria as follows: “With a charming brick-lined Old Town, a beautiful waterfront, and convenient metro access for commuting to nearby Washington, D.C., the Northern Virginia city of Alexandria has long drawn young professionals and families seeking a more relaxed atmosphere than what you'd find in the nation's capital. Now the tourists are coming to get in on the fun, too, drawn to the great shopping, dining, and the arts community (check out the Torpedo Factory Art Center). A big plus: Alexandria is especially friendly to dogs, which we think might contributes to people's overall sense of wellbeing.”
