Multiple development projects to bring new residences to Old Town are up for consideration at Tuesday evening's City Council meeting.
301 N. Fairfax St.
Opposed by many local residents who have put signs in their yards, 301 N. Fairfax St. There is currently an underused office building there, at the intersection of Queen Street. The owners are proposing tearing the building down and building a 50-unit residential building with one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The building would include underground parking.
Council was to vote on the project in December, but a protest petition from local residents that required a supermajority of council approval put a pause on the docket item. "The building would take up half a city block and overwhelm the OAHD’s 18th and 19th-century townhomes buildings with its stark, commercial design," the petition stated.
Now, coucil is set to consider a change to the Alexandria master plan that would allow the project to move forward.
The Ladrey - Old Town North
The Ladrey Hi-Rise is slated to become shorter. City Council will be considering a master plan amendment to allow the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority to move forward with a redevelopment. The Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) will take down the 11-story, 170-unit affordable building at 300 Wythe Street and a building at 600 N. Fairfax Street, and replace them with shorter (six-story) building with 270 affordable units.
