A growing grassroots holiday cheer effort is returning to Del Ray this season.
Outside houses throughout Del Ray, residents are painting large pieces of plywood to look like the front of a holiday card.
The tradition started back in 2014 with just one family on East Luray Avenue and grew slowly at first before turning into a much larger effort during the pandemic.
Inspired by her childhood trips down Holiday Card Lane in Kalamazoo, Michigan, resident and artist Rebecca VanZoeren started creating her own giant, painted plywood holiday cards along with some of her neighbors.
This year, the highest concentration of cards is along East Luray Avenue between Commonwealth and Mount Vernon Avenues, but dozens more cards dot Del Ray from West Glendale Avenue in the southwest to Clifford Avenue and Holly Street to the north.
According to a community map (below), there are at least 26 cards that will be set out by this Sunday, Dec. 5, ahead of the Del Ray Christmas Tree and Menorah lighting event.
