You may see more bikes on area roadways than usual this Friday.
Friday, May 17 is National Bike to Work Day.
Alexandria officials are encouraging community members to bike to work that day -- and it may be a good time to test your bicycle commute into Arlington or the District.
Starting May 25 (through approximately Sept. 8), Metro will be shutting down rail service to the 6 stations that serve the Alexandria area -- Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield. The stations will be closed as Metro tries to get "Back to Good" and performs major platform repair work and station overhauls.

The first 20,000 bicycle commuters registered for Bike to Work Day will receive a t-shirt and a raffle entry with a chance to win a brand new bicycle. (More info is here.)
There will be multiple pit stops across the region with water and information for bicyclists. The City of Alexandria's main pit stop at Market Square in Old Town (301 King Street) will have refreshments, a chance to win prizes from local businesses and sponsors, and a DASH bus that cyclists can use to practice loading and unloading their bikes onto.
The following is a list of pit stops in the Alexandria area. Register for Bike to Work Day and choose your t-shirt pick-up location at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org.
