A unique club for women offering pre-natal and post-partum yoga, feeding circles, helpful workshops and a variety of resources for moms is now open in Alexandria.
Birth Club, at 107 N. Fairfax St. in Old Town, describes itself as a “a yoga, education, and self-care community, designed just for moms and moms-to-be.”
In addition to yoga classes for pre-natal and post-partum women, Birth Club offers a variety of educational events such as discussions with doulas, private lactation consultation, mindfulness workshops, pelvic floor workshops, holistic sleep education, access to therapists and more.
Birth Club's free baby feeding circle Wednesday mornings welcomes all types of feeding mothers and their babies (not just breastfed babies), and allows women to connect with other new moms. Friday morning yoga classes come with child-minding, and yoga classes at 8 p.m. some weeknights are designed for moms who can’t attend during the day or earlier in the evening.
Birth Club came together quickly after co-founder Liz Bolton heard about a similar studio in New York. The idea really resonated with her, and after a career in marketing, writing and publishing, she knew the idea would be a hit with Alexandria women.
Bolton, who has run several marathons, said, “Having a place to learn how to move again would have helped" after she had her first child. (Bolton's son is now 3 years old.)
The first Monday after she quit her full-time job back in May, Bolton met Linsay Hiller at a lobbying day for mothers on Capitol Hill. Hiller would become her co-founder, business partner and friend. (Hiller has a 3-year-old boy and a 15-month-old girl.)
They decided to work together in June, signed the lease for their unique space in July and hosted their first events there in August. By the end of September, Birth Club had more than 100 mothers using their services. The official grand opening will be later this month.
“We want women to feel comfortable coming here and talking about anything,” Hiller said. “We want to be a place you can go and find out the things you didn’t even know that you didn’t know about.”
